Blow up the road

Blow up the Road

Painting: Oil on Canvas
Size: 180×180 cm

The Jarawas are one of the indigenous groups that have been inhabiting the Andaman Islands of India for a few thousand years. Currently, the Jarawas population is about 400 people. Threatened by continuing deforestation and colonization, the Jarawas are subjected to poverty, disease, and sexual exploitation by illegal hunters. They are also the object of the so-called “human safaris”: journeys in which tourists cross the Andaman Truck Road to see the Jarawas, throw them food, and ask them to dance. This road, the origin of all of Jarawas’ problems, was declared illegal by the Indian Supreme Court in 2002. Currently, it is not only functional, but in process of being expanded.
